The 17 questionspeople ask.

Short answers, in the order the questions really come up.

The fair objection

Does Liaison mix for me?

No, and it cannot. Liaison sends no commands to your DJ software: it reads what is loaded on your decks, and that is all. No auto-play, no forced sync, no transition triggered for you. Unplug it mid-set and nothing happens. What it does is show you five tracks from YOUR library that follow the one playing, and say why: key, tempo offset, energy jump. The decision stays entirely yours.

Will it flatten my style? Will every DJ end up playing the same thing?

The opposite happens, and it is measurable. Liaison watches what you play AFTER each suggestion, especially the ones you ignore, and moves its six criteria towards yours. A house DJ who holds the key to the semitone and a wedding DJ who jumps from 95 to 128 BPM do not get the same suggestions after forty transitions. Nothing moves before twelve tracks played, everything is bounded, and one button wipes it.

I have been mixing for fifteen years. What is in it for me?

Nothing for the first two hours: you know your own library. It earns its place at 3 a.m., when a track you had forgotten six months ago comes back up because its key and tempo fit. When a bride asks for something you did not prepare. When you cover a gig at short notice in a style that is not yours. An experienced DJ uses it twice a night, and those two times are the ones that count.

Compatibility

Which DJ software does it work with?

Serato DJ Pro, Traktor Pro, VirtualDJ and rekordbox, on macOS 10.15 and later, and Windows 10 and 11. Serato, Traktor and VirtualDJ need no hardware at all: Liaison reads their live session. rekordbox is the special case: see the next question.

Why does rekordbox need hardware?

Because rekordbox does not write the playing track anywhere readable: its database is encrypted, and Liaison does not decrypt it. The track does travel over the Pro DJ Link network as soon as a CDJ, XDJ or DJM is connected, and there Liaison reads it, before the track is even playing. Without Pioneer hardware on the network there is the widget's search box: type two letters, declare the track, and everything else works.

Do I need internet during the gig?

Not to mix. Analysis, engine and library are entirely local: suggestions never touch the network. Liaison needs the internet to check your licence (valid thirty days offline after a check) and, if you open an online guest session, so that phones on 4G can send their requests. Without internet, that page switches to the venue Wi-Fi on its own.

Your library

Do my tracks leave my machine?

Never. No audio file is sent anywhere, and there is no account to create. Analysis (tempo, key, energy, mix points) is computed on your computer. What reaches the server is your licence key and a machine identifier, at activation. And, only while an online guest session is open, the titles and artists guests can search (no file, no path), deleted 48 hours after the night.

How long does it take to read my library?

Seconds if your DJ software has already analysed your tracks: Liaison reads its database rather than redoing the work. On a folder of raw files, expect one to two hours for twenty thousand tracks, once. The result is kept between sessions: the second launch is instant, and adding ten tracks costs ten reads, not twenty thousand.

Does Liaison modify my files or my rekordbox database?

No. Liaison reads; it never writes to your files or to your DJ software's database. Even when it detects a wrong tempo, it shows you and lets you fix it: it is your library, and it represents years of work.

Price and licence

What if my trial runs out before I've played a night?

It doesn't. The seven days are a floor, not a limit: until you have played two real nights with Liaison, the trial stays open, automatically, without asking. That is the whole point: what Resident opens up are the tools for a night on the job: the client's lists, the guests' QR code, the tracklist to declare, the debrief. None of that can be judged on a Tuesday evening at home. A wedding DJ plays two to four times a month, so a calendar week often means zero real nights. A real night, for Liaison, is at least eight tracks mixed over at least three quarters of an hour: plugging in your controller for five minutes on a Tuesday doesn't use up your trial. After two months it closes anyway: past that, it isn't a trial any more.

What does it cost?

There is no permanent free plan, and that is deliberate: we chose the lowest possible entry price over a crippled free tier. The night pass costs €4.95 and covers 48 hours, not 24, because a night that starts at 7 p.m. on Saturday ends at 5 a.m. on Sunday. It opens everything: the engine, the mix points, the guest QR code, the client's lists. No subscription, nothing to cancel. Resident is €14.95 a month (that price does not move) or €134 a year, which works out at €11.17 a month. Collective is €44.95 a month, or €404 a year, for up to five DJs. Three nights on the pass already cost as much as a month of Resident: you work that out for yourself. The full trial runs 7 days, no card required.

Why only €4.95, and no compulsory subscription?

Because a DJ who plays three weddings a year has no reason to pay for twelve months. The reason we can go this low is technical: the engine runs on your machine. Producing a suggestion costs us no server, no bandwidth, no electricity, so selling 48 hours for the price of a coffee doesn't put us at risk. A tool that computes on its own servers can't do that: every suggestion costs it something, so it has to charge a subscription and ration. No ads, no data resale, no account to create. There is nothing to resell: your music and your sets stay on your machine.

Can I install it on my laptop and on the booth machine?

Yes: Resident covers two machines. You can prepare a night at home and arrive with the same library, the same night sheets and the same learning. If you change computer, one button releases the machine and returns the seat.

What happens if I stop the subscription?

Nothing is deleted. Your analysed library, your night sheets and your set history stay on your machine: they do not live inside the application. The widget keeps offering a transition; guest sessions and set replay close. Resubscribing reopens everything exactly where it was.

Day to day

How do guest requests work?

Guests scan a QR code with their camera: the page opens on 4G or on the venue Wi-Fi, with no account and no app to install. They search your library, typos included, leave a request and see it go from “pending” to “played ✓”. Five requests per phone, ninety seconds between two (both adjustable). You see the list ranked by how many distinct people asked, and you decide. Your QR code never changes: print the poster once, stick it on every table. Each night still starts from a clean slate.

How do I install an update?

There is nothing to uninstall. On Mac you drag the new version into Applications and replace the old one; on Windows the installer runs over the top. Settings, analysed library, night sheets, history and licence are all kept. You do not have to watch the site either: the application tells you when a newer version exists, and nothing installs without you.

Why does macOS say the developer cannot be verified?

Because Liaison is not signed with a paid Apple certificate. It is the standard message for any application distributed outside the App Store, and it says nothing about what the software does. First time: right-click the app, then Open. Once. On Windows, SmartScreen asks for More info, then Run anyway.

For Peter Helliot

My father. The first DJ in the house — the one who already knew which track came next, with no widget, no screen, nothing.

He has been my example. This app comes from his idea: it was born behind his decks. I am very proud of him.

Thank you, Dad.
